“Happiness First” is the title of the exhibition, which can be seen at Schloss Gabelhofen until 30 June 2024. As an artist of the 21st century, French artist Gaël Davrinche is developing a painting practice that engages with the history of academic painting, its traditions and its figurative dimension. Many of his works are described as “flower paintings”.
The specificity of Gaël Davrinche’s work lies in the fact that he practices representational painting in a dialogue between past and present, using a quoting approach and a semantics of alienation. The Botanica and Portraits series of works are different in their reference to the past. While the Portraits pictures essentially aim to open up a cultural history, the Botanica pictures attempt to rid themselves of their frame of reference and thus largely steer clear of commentary, analyses and comparisons. Instead, the focus should no longer be on the narrative dimension of the painting, but on the painting itself.
