Hiking in the Murtal valley

The valley is overlooked by the Zirbitzkogel, which dominates the surrounding landscape at 2,396 metres. To the Zirbitzkogel
Sabathyhütte / Tour data: 780 metres altitude, 3.5 hours, medium
From the Sabathyhütte, trail no. 316 leads to the summit of the Zirbitzkogel, naturally via pristine stone pine forests. First you come to the rustic Linderhütte hut, then to the picturesque Lindersee lake, from where the trail climbs up to the summit in steep hairpin bends.

Waldheimhütte / Tour data: 780 metres altitude, 3.5 hours, medium
The ascent from the Waldheimhütte is the most leisurely ascent to the Zirbitzkogel. The marked path leads across a meadow directly to a gravel road, which is also used by the landlord of the Zirbitzkogel shelter to transport food. The last 170 vertical metres of the trail are conquered in somewhat steeper serpentines.

Winterleitenhütte / Tour data: 630 metres altitude, 3.5 hours – challenging
From the car park just before the Winterleitenhühte, the well-marked long-distance hiking trail number 308 leads across the two Winterleiten lakes into the beautiful mountain landscape of the Seetal Alps. After crossing the valley basin, the so-called “Schreiber Steig” runs along steep mountain slopes and leads directly up to the summit.

Hochalm/Maria Schnee
Tour data: 790 metres in altitude, 10.5 km 4 hours, medium
This hike on the eastern edge of the Seckau Alps with the destination of the Maria Schnee pilgrimage church is certainly one of the top hiking destinations in the Murtal valley region. The church at 1,822 metres above sea level impresses with its views of the Seetal Alps, the Styrian Randgebirge and the Judenburg-Knittelfeld basin.

Tremmelberg
Tour data: 500 hm, 9.5 km, 2.45 hours, medium
A beautiful hike, which mostly leads through wooded areas and across beautiful meadows, can be found very close to the Steirerschlössl. You start from the car park in Sachendorf and follow the well-signposted hiking trail until you reach your destination for the day, the “Turm im Gebirge”. The two twin towers are 46 metres high and offer the perfect viewing platform for a breathtaking view over the Murtal valley. Tip: Take a 1 euro coin with you for the turnstile!

Großlobminger Panorama Trail
Tour data: 400 metres in altitude, 15 km, 4 hours, medium
An excellent time-out hike. On this hike, you can start directly at G’Schlössl Murtal valley. From there, take a leisurely stroll across the floodplain of the Mur to Apfelberg. Follow the forest roads uphill to the Thalberghof. You then hike back to Großlobming along a high-altitude trail through forests and meadows with great views. The exercise, the tranquillity of nature and the wonderful views give you the opportunity to come to rest.
